Summer is filled to the brim with positive vibes beach days, ice-cold rose, and exotic vacations but I’d like to talk for a second about one of the less attractive attributes of the warm weather. After a long run or a lengthy bike ride, when we get home and finally slip out of our shoes, we’re greeted by a nasty, smelly foot odor. Lucky for us, Science found a pretty successful way to get rid of stinky feet.
A 2017 study found a simple addition of socks with copper oxide can help to ditch the odor for those who’ve been experiencing athlete’s foot. Researchers supplied three pairs of copper-oxide socks to participants who’d indicated that they’d experienced athlete’s foot within the last six months and told them to use them as they would regular socks.
At the end of 90 days, 82 percent of participants who’d said that they felt uncomfortable showing their feet in public prior to the study changed their tune: 61 percent reported less smelly feet, 51 percent said their feet looked better, and 58 percent said they’d feel more comfortable showing their barefeet in public. Not too shabby, huh?
Copper has two intrinsic properties that make it a very attractive ingredient to be used in socks,” explains the study’s lead author Gadi Borkow. “First, it is a wide spectrum potent antifungal and antibacterial mineral, and as such when in the socks it kills fungi and bacteria, reducing the foul they cause. Second, copper is an essential mineral needed by the body for the normal function of its tissues.
Consider us converts! For the rest of the summer we’ll just be over here slipping on our new mineral-laced socks socking it to the odor.
